Ear Infections in Pets

Ear Infections in Pets

Nobody enjoys an ear infection. Ear infections can be especially painful and frustrating for your pets, who have no verbal way of letting you know that they are in pain. To keep your pet safe from ear infections, you should know what signs to look for and how they are treated. At Danforth Animal Hospital, our veterinarians in Edmond are experts in treating pet ear infections. If you see any of these signs, bring your pet in for an examination and treatment.

What Causes a Pet Ear Infection?

Ear infections are generally caused by yeast, bacteria, ear mites, or a combination thereof in the pet’s ear. Other factors, such as breed, health, and environment can also play a role.

The Signs of an Ear Infection in Pets

While most pets can get an ear infection, dogs are especially prone to them. This is even more of an issue for floppy-eared breeds. If your pets seem to be scratching or rubbing their ears more than usual, take a closer look. This is likely in response to the pain of an ear infection. Look for redness, swelling, discharge, and crust in and around the ears. If you see any of these symptoms, it is most likely an ear infection.

Treatment for Pet Ear Infections

You will need to bring your pet to our veterinarians for a proper diagnosis. Once the veterinarian confirms the ear infection, we will treat it with antibiotics or anti-fungal medication, depending on the nature of the infection. The treatment will begin at our animal hospital but will continue at home with ear drops. It is extremely important that you complete the full course of treatment with your pet, even if they begin to feel better partway through. Otherwise, the ear infection will likely come back and might become resistant to the treatment.
