Heatstroke in Dogs & Cats: Prevent Your Pet from Overheating

Heatstroke is a serious concern in the warm weather for both cats and dogs. It is imperative to prevent your pet from overheating. By following a few pet tips carefully, you can be sure that your pets get to enjoy the warm weather and stay healthy. Our team at Danforth Animal Hospital has served the pet communities of Edmond, Guthrie, and Oklahoma City for 40 years. We believe in treating your pets like the valued family members they are.

Hydration

In warm weather, hydration is an important factor to keep in mind. Your pet needs to have a continual supply of fresh water to drink. Have a bowl that is not easily tipped over and, especially if you are not around all day and your pet is outdoors, one that will replenish itself. Your pet counts on you for everything and making sure it has water is vital.

Exercise

Exercise is important for pets, no matter what the weather. Dogs are in more danger when it comes to exercise since they are often taken for walks or to the dog park for exercise. In the extreme heat of summer, it is better to avoid excess activity at midday. Early mornings or evenings are cooler. Be sure you have access to water on your route. Keep in mind that the pavement may be hot and it can burn your pet’s paw pads.

Vehicles

Vehicles are death traps for pets in hot weather. Even if the temperature is only in the 70s outside, the temperature in your vehicle can rise at an alarming rate and many pets die from heatstroke in a closed vehicle. Cracking the window does not provide enough protection to save your pet. Contact one of our veterinarians immediately if you suspect your pet is overheated.
