Preparing Your Pet For Surgery

Preparing Your Pet For Surgery

Going into surgery, no matter how minor or insignificant, can be a stressful experience for you and your furry loved one. That is why you want a veterinarian that will care for your pet like their own. At Danforth Animal Hospital in Edmond, we are here to provide your furry friend the quality care that he needs.

What To Do Before Your Pet Has Surgery

Surgery preparation starts the week before, not days or nights before. This is especially true if the veterinarian needs additional tests before the surgical procedure, including blood work, radiographs, ultrasounds, and other diagnostics. Here are a few other tips when preparing your pet for surgery.

Pet Anesthesia

If your pet is scheduled to have anesthesia, fasting with only water is allowed the night before. If your pet vomits due to the drugs, he may aspirate, or inhale, the vomit into the lungs, resulting in a fatal type of pneumonia known as aspiration pneumonia.

The only exception is for puppies or kittens or pets with diabetes. Puppies and kittens have limited energy reserves, so the vet will most likely advise you to feed him a small breakfast in the morning. For pets with diabetes, insulin and a small meal may need to be allowed.

Recovery Area

Another surgery preparation action you can do is to make a special area in your home for your dog's recovery. He may still be groggy from the pet anesthesia. Set up a crate or let him have a special room away from the other pets.

A Bath the Night Before

Another good tip before pet surgery is to bathe your pet the day before, as this can help reduce the risk of infection afterward.
