Halloween Hazards for your Pet

Halloween Hazards

Enjoy your Trick or Treating but make sure to keep certain treats out of reach of your pet.

  • Grapes and Raisins:  Grapes and raisins are toxic to pets.  They should not be fed to them.  Even a small amount of grapes can cause kidney failure.  If your pet has eaten any grapes please contact us immediately.
  • Chocolate: Chocolates can be especially harmful to your pets.  Any type of chocolate can cause gastrointestinal upset but many chocolates can cause cardiac arrhythmias as well. Dark chocolates and baking chocolates are especially harmful.  Chocolate toxicity can be fatal to your pet. If your pet ingests any chocolate please call our office immediately and we can help to minimize the complications if it is caught early enough.
  • Alcohol:  Always be cautious about any drinks, especially mixed drinks containing alcohol.  Even a small amount of alcohol can cause your pet to be lethargic, depressed, and ataxic.
  • Trick or Treating:  Having visitors come to your house may be stressful for your pet.  If your pet has anxiety about strangers and scary costumes, it may be wise to put them in a safe area of your house away from the front door commotion.  If you take your pet trick or treating with you be sure that they have reflective collars on and are secured on a leash.  Walking at night and seeing many costumes can frighten even a very well socialized pet.

Enjoy your Halloween festivities.  And as always should any concerns arise please don’t hesitate to call our office immediately.
